چکیده

Introduction Validation of findings from in vivo imaging (e.g. MRI) of the prostate requires precise correlation of histopathological information on a voxel-by-voxel basis, with sub-millimeter accuracy in the absence of identifiable anatomic landmarks. A method is developed to register histopathology sections and in vivo MR images of the prostate obtained with a combination of a phased-array and an endodrectal coil. Previous relevant work includes co-registration and warping of MR images to histolopathologic sections using nonlinear thin-plate splines in small animal studies (1) and co-registration of histolopathological and MR images of the prostate using both boundary and internal landmarks with thin-plate splines (2). Here we present a 2D semiautomatic nonrigid registration using free-form deformation (FFD) based on B-splines (3) to co-register MR images to histopathological sections. Landmarks are used to match the corresponding MR images and histopathological slides.

An Elastic Registration Algorithm based on Strain Energy Minimization and its Application to Prostate MR images

B. Zhang, R. P. Gullapalli Magnetic Resonance Research Center, Dept of Radiology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, United States Background Magnetic resonance imaging using the endorectal coil (erMRI) has become the clinical standard in the diagnosis of prostate cancer as it provides excellent quality high resolution images. However the images and spectra obtained using...

Validation of deformable registration of prostate MRI with and without endorectal coil for IMRT planning

Introduction Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) allows highly conformal ‘sculpting’ of the shape and intensity of a radiation dose distribution. One of the major challenges in further improving IMRT lies in adequately defining target volumes and quantifying tumour heterogeneity. Anatomical MRI as well as physiologic and metabolic MR techniques such as diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI),...

MR Spectroscopic Imaging of Peripheral Zone in Prostate Cancer Using a 3T MRI Scanner: Endorectal versus External Phased Array Coils

Magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) detects alterations in major prostate metabolites, such as citrate (Cit), creatine (Cr), and choline (Ch). We evaluated the sensitivity and accuracy of three-dimensional MRSI of prostate using an endorectal compared to an external phased array "receive" coil on a 3T MRI scanner. Eighteen patients with prostate cancer (PCa) who underwent endorectal...

Optimization of clinical target volume delineation using magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) in 3D conformal radiotherapy of prostate cancer

Background: For the purpose of individual clinical target volume assessment in radiotherapy of prostate cancer, MRSI was used as a molecular imaging modality with MRI and CT images. Materials and Methods: The images of 20 prostate cancer patients were used in this study. The MR and MRSI images were registered with CT ones using non-rigid registration technique. The CT based planning (BP), CT/MR...

Registration of MR prostate images with biomechanical modeling and nonlinear parameter estimation.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) have been shown to be very useful for identifying prostate cancers. For high sensitivity, the MRI/MRSI examination is often acquired with an endorectal probe that may cause a substantial deformation of the prostate and surrounding soft tissues. Such a probe is removed prior to radiation therapy treatment. To re...
